What is Intergroup?

Iowa City Intergroup is an AA service that involves partnership among groups in the community. It exists to aid the groups in our common purpose of carrying the A.A. message to the alcoholic who still suffers. Intergroup is largely supported by financial contributions from AA groups and individual members.

Iowa City Intergroup provides the following services:

  • Serves as a clearing house for AA information in the area.
  • Provides 24-hour contact with AA. We manage and cover the 24- hour AA “hot line”.
  • Maintains a list of AA members available to do 12 step work.
  • Maintains this website (www.aaiowacity.org), which publishes the area AA schedule, local AA events, and other AA related items of interest.
  • Sponsors two annual events: the New Year’s Eve party and the spring/summer banquet.
  • Fosters communication between groups to provide current local AA information for newcomers, members,  AA visitors , and most importantly, for the alcoholic who still suffers.

Intergroup was the creation of AA groups and individual members.  They “own” it.  It is not an autonomous AA entity.  Rather, it derives all it’s authority from AA groups and individual AA members in the area it serves. This delegation of authority from the AA groups to Intergroup follows the second of the Twelve Traditions and the third of the Twelve Concepts of World Service.
